The soap or solid that holds the base oil in a semi-solid structure and makes a grease a grease rather than an oil — a lithium soap, a lithium complex, a mixed lithium/calcium soap. Published on all eight manufacturer grease datasheets read at the mint, under five different field names ('Soap Type', 'Thickener', 'Thickener Type', 'Soap/thickener', 'Thickener Type, m%') which are one field wearing five surfaces. It is the fact that sets the grease's temperature range and its water resistance, and it is the first of the two questions that cannot be asked of ANY liquid service fluid: an engine oil, an automatic-transmission fluid, a brake fluid and a coolant have no thickener at all, and no sheet for any of them carries the field.
