grease

A service fluid held in a semi-solid structure so that it stays where it is put — packed into a bearing, a joint or a gear case instead of circulating. It strictly refines ServiceFluid by slots that have no meaning for any liquid in the family: `thickener` (what makes it a grease — a lithium, lithium-complex or lithium/calcium soap, a polyurea, or a non-soap bentonite clay), `dropping_point` (the temperature at which that structure releases its oil and the grease stops being a grease) and the service band `service_temperature_min` / `service_temperature_max` (a named table field on 11 of the 19 grease sheets read at the mint and prose on five more — published MORE OFTEN than base oil type, and the fact DIN 51502 encodes in the last two characters of a code like KP2K-30; two scalars rather than one range because the pool has no range shape). Both are published on ALL EIGHT manufacturer grease datasheets read at the mint — Shell Gadus S2 V220 2, Mobilgrease XHP 222, SKF LGMT 2 and LGMT 3, TotalEnergies MULTIS EP 2, Castrol Spheerol EPL 2, Chevron Delo Grease ESI EP 2 and Starplex EP — and on NONE of the two dozen engine-oil, gear-oil, transmission-fluid, brake-fluid and coolant sheets read beside them, because an oil has no thickener to name and no structure to drop out of. `dropping_point` is deliberately OPTIONAL and not required, and there is a real product behind that choice: a non-soap clay grease (Phillips 66 Bentone) is published as NON-MELT and has no dropping point at all. Its consistency is the inherited `viscosity_grade` on the NLGI scale (NLGI 2 is the trade default), its base oil's thickness is the inherited `kinematic_viscosity` at 40 C, its duty is the inherited `fluid_duty` (bearing or chassis lubrication), and its fill is `net_weight` in kilograms, not `net_content` — a grease is sold by the kilo, and the 1 KG tin on one Dar es Salaam duka's shelf is the case. TWO THINGS RECORDED AT THE MINT so a later session does not have to rediscover them. First, the DIN 51502 code trap: a code like KP2K-30 or KP2K-25 is a real published designation whose parts are already sayable here (K = grease, P = EP additives, 2 = the NLGI grade, K = upper temperature +120 C, -30 = lower), but DIN 51502 defines the CODE FORMAT while DIN 51825 defines the REQUIREMENTS, and the sheets label the same string inconsistently — SKF calls it 51825, TotalEnergies calls it 51502. If the code is ever stated as a whole it belongs in `meets_specification` under 51502, which is the grammar. Second, the base-oil ISO VG on a grease sheet is an APPROXIMATION and not a measurement: Chevron's own field name is 'ISO Viscosity Grade, Base Oil Equivalent' and its value straddles two grades (220/320) while the measured figure sits between them at 261 mm2/s.
