dropping point

The temperature at which the thickener structure releases its base oil and the grease stops being a grease — the practical ceiling of its service range. Published on all eight grease datasheets read at the mint (Mobilgrease XHP 222 280 C on the 2006 PDS and 290 C on the current maker's page, both maker-published; SKF LGMT 2 above 180 C; MULTIS EP 2 above 185 C; Starplex EP 230-plus), under four different test methods (ASTM D2265, IP 396, DIN ISO 2176) of which one sheet cites none. It is the second question that has no meaning for a liquid: an oil has a pour point and a flash point but no dropping point, because there is no structure to drop out of. NOTE a real fidelity limit recorded at the mint rather than hidden: the published value is very often an INEQUALITY or an open bound ('>180', '230+'), and a numeral-and-unit holds only a scalar, so a bound must currently be recorded at its stated number and the inequality lost. Concern measurement.
